Middle Grade, Horror, Adventure, Mystery, Vampires, Friendship

Kalynn Bayron is an accomplished and award-winning author who has penned several notable works, including Cinderella is Dead, You’re Not Supposed to Die Tonight, This Poison Heart, The Wicked Fate, and My Dear Henry. Raised in Alaska and now residing in Texas with her family, Kalynn is also a classically trained vocalist.

In her middle-grade horror series debut, The Vanquishers, Bayron draws inspiration from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Watchmen. The story is narrated by the main character, Malika (aka Boog). In Boog’s world, vampires were once a threat until the Vanquishers defeated them. Despite this victory, Boog’s parents and neighbors remain vigilant, which Boog and her friends find embarrassing. However, when a new kid in the neighborhood goes missing, Boog begins to suspect her parents might have been right all along. Determined to uncover the truth about their missing friend and the Vanquishers, Boog and her friends embark on an adventurous mission, facing mysterious and sabotaging forces along the way.

What Works The Vanquishers sets itself apart by featuring a diverse, multigenerational cast of characters, breaking away from the common middle-grade trope of absent or disconnected adults. The book is noted for its absence of extreme violence or gore, making it suitable for younger readers who can enjoy the story without being too frightened. It incorporates teachable moments about bullying and character-building in a natural, unforced manner, and its unexpected humor adds a layer of fun and levity.

Pass it or Grab it?  This book is a recommended addition for preteen readers, whether in a home, school, or public library collection. Despite its horror genre, it is rich with pop culture references and culturally relevant humor, ensuring an enjoyable and memorable read from start to finish.
